Across the sciences, research at Bristol is among the very best in the UK and has global impact. Postgraduate students are a vital part of our dynamic research community. The integration of education and research in the Faculty helps to take postgraduate studies to the cutting edge of modern science.
Professor Timothy Gallagher, Dean, Faculty of Science
Acknowledged as internationally leading, the Faculty of Science provides an outstanding intellectual environment for over 700 postgraduate students, in the Schools of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Experimental Psychology, Geographical Sciences, Mathematics and Physics.
There are also tremendous opportunities for interdisciplinary study in research groupings and centres for: Behavioural Biology; Biogeochemistry; Climate Change; the Cabot Institute for Global Environmental Change; Complexity Science; Nanoscience and Quantum Information; Chemical Synthesis; Neuroscience; Environmental and Geophysical Flows; Bristol Initiative for the Dynamic Global Environment; Cognition and Information Technology; Molecular Recognition; and Interface Analysis.
Postgraduate education includes a range of taught Masters programmes. In addition, a one year MSc by Research is offered by all schools in any research area. Conventional PhD programmes run alongside Centres for Doctoral Training in Complexity Sciences, Statistics, Chemical Synthesis, and Functional Nanomaterials. These Centres offer four-year PhD programmes which include one year of MSc-level training in the chosen discipline. These are amongst the UK's first such Centres.
Research within the Faculty is supported by funding from Research Councils, industry and charities. High-quality computing, information and library facilities, which play a major part in scientific research and postgraduate study, are well supported at University and School level.

The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise put Bristol in the top three UK science faculties. Two thirds of the Faculty's research activity was rated world-leading or internationally excellent and 95% at least internationally recognised. Our performance reflects an exceptional depth of talent, capacity for development and environment for world-leading research.
