University home > Postgraduate Prospectus … > Fees and funding
Being a postgraduate student involves two main expenses: tuition fees and living costs. It is important that you know your tuition fee and estimated living costs when planning your finances for your postgraduate study, as the University will not be able to assist students financially if they arrive without adequate funding.
We classify all students as UK, EU or overseas for fees purposes. The amount you will pay for tuition fees and the financial support available to help you with this will depend on your fee status classification.
Each of our postgraduate programmes has a specific cost for tuition. Wherever possible, up-to-date fees are provided with each programme entry in this prospectus. Fees are quoted per year and are subject to annual review so are liable to rise each year. The tuition fee itself covers charges for tuition, examination, registration and a contribution towards the cost of membership of the University Union. Self-funded international students accepting a place on a taught postgraduate programme will need to pay a deposit of £1,000, which can be paid online or by cheque.
The University must assess fee status according to The Education (Fees and Awards) (England) Regulations 2007 and The Student Fees (Qualifying Courses and Persons) (England) Regulations 2007. We make a decision on your fee status only once your application has been received and processed, and an offer of study is made to you. Unfortunately fee status regulations are complex and depend on a number of factors, including residency and immigration. You can see the legislation we use to determine fee status, and work out your own fee status by consulting the UKCISA website.
If you feel you have a more complicated case, please feel free to contact us for advice. However, please be aware that a decision on fee status is only made post-application and only if an offer of study is made to you.
Tuition fees may be paid in full at registration or by two instalments. Payment may be made on our Online Payments website, by direct debit or credit card, or by cheque. For further details email student-fees@bristol.ac.uk or call the Income Office on +44 (0117) 954 6372.
We do not currently charge an application fee for our programmes.
We know that applicants from some countries had problems in paying the application fee for Masters programmes in the School of Economics, Finance and Management last year. We have therefore suspended the application fee for 2014 entry.
Living costs in Bristol tend to be higher than in some other parts of the country, although less than in London. Currently, postgraduate students are advised that, in addition to tuition fees, they might need somewhere in the region of £800 to £900 per month.
Any scholarship funding you receive is likely to be based on the cost of living for a single student, and will not cover the costs of couples and families. Please ensure that you have sufficient funding in place for the full length of your programme.
For further information about living costs, please see the Student Funding Office website.
The University offers a number of scholarships and studentships to postgraduate students. Further information on funding for UK students is available from the Student Funding Office. International students can search for funding options on the Student Funding website.
In some cases, departments have access to programme-specific funding. We've provided some information about these options with the individual programme entries. However, we recommend that you also contact the department to which you are applying to enquire about any other possibilities, which they may be able to offer.
Some schools and departments have programme-specific funding for their taught programmes. Please see individual programme entries for details on funding opportunities for taught programmes.
The University offers a financial support package for PGCE students from the UK/EU with a residual household income of £42,611 or below, who are not in receipt of bursary funding of £4,000 or above from another source. 2013 bursaries were set at £9,000 for students with a first-class undergraduate degree and £4,000 for those with an upper second-class degree. Please see the Graduate School of Education website for further information.
Follow us on Twitter to find out about available studentships at the University. We also advertise our available studentships on www.jobs.ac.uk.
Seven UK Research Councils offer support to UK/EU students on research (and occasionally taught) programmes. For further information please see our Student Funding Office website.
The University offers a number of funded postgraduate research scholarships for outstanding applicants across all faculties. Awards normally cover full tuition fees and a stipend paid at the Research Council rate, but partial awards may also be offered if students are able to demonstrate additional alternative funding. Selection is devolved to each Faculty and awards are open to both UK/EU and international students. Please contact the School where you intend to apply, and see our Student Funding Office website for further information.
If you are a prospective international student, you can use our scholarship search engine to find out about relevant scholarships and bursaries which you may be eligible to apply for. To begin searching, visit the Student Funding Office website
In some cases, you will first need to hold an offer of study at Bristol before being able to apply for a scholarship. The Student Funding Office give details on the application process for the scholarships they list. Any Department allocated funding detailed on the relevant Department website will also be accompanied by application details.
If you encounter unanticipated financial difficulty due to changes in circumstances after commencing studies, you should contact the Student Funding Office for advice.
