Programme overview

The Department of Classics and Ancient History, world-renowned for its trail-blazing approach to the discipline, offers the opportunity for study in myth, literature and art from the Bronze Age to the modernists, and approaches to the past from economic and social history to the study of historiography. Within this programme you can choose a course of study that matches your research interests. Whichever you choose, you will enhance and develop your skills and knowledge in Greek and Roman cultures and their impact through the ages.

You may use the MA programme to explore new areas and disciplines, or to gain a firm grounding in the traditional skills of the classicist or ancient historian. We are also unique in that we offer our MA students the opportunity to study both Latin and Greek languages at any level, from beginner to advanced.

As a postgraduate student, you will play a key role in our vibrant research culture. The Department holds a weekly research seminar, which explores classical antiquity and its reception, while the Faculty's research body, the Institute of Greece, Rome and the Classical Tradition, organises seminars and conferences throughout the year. You are also encouraged to attend relevant seminars and lectures in other departments.
