Programme overview

This innovative programme enables you to engage with the different ways in which the classical past, and its literature, art and ideas, have been received and appropriated in the post-classical world. Bristol has been at the forefront of classical reception studies for more than 20 years, and we offer a broad, theoretically-informed approach to the subject, to help you develop the skills and knowledge necessary for interdisciplinary studies. You will be encouraged to reflect on reception theories and methodologies and to consider the ways in which classical material is reinterpreted in different contexts. You will also develop a solid foundation in new disciplinary areas linked to your own research interests, such as history of art or film theory.
