Programme overview

This programme is designed to enable students from a range of professional backgrounds to develop their knowledge and understanding of the ways in which the theories, principles and practices of counselling can be used to support the personal and academic development of learners in all phases of education.

Through the use of case studies, working with visiting professionals, engaging with research literature and carrying out practical activities, you will learn how to enhance your professional practice through the use of counselling skills.

We use a range of innovative and creative approaches to assessment which enables you to demonstrate your research skills, critical thinking and reflection on practice.

Units in this programme focus upon theoretical approaches to counselling and the application of counselling principles in educational settings. The programme is particularly suitable for those professionals looking to support the inclusion and achievement of learners within their own professional context in critically reflecting upon the importance of social and emotional health and wellbeing and its link to attainment.

Our students in previous years have included teachers from primary, secondary and postcompulsory sectors, adult educators, social workers, teaching assistants and education managers.
