We pride ourselves on providing our first-year students with not only a bed, but also the opportunity to join a community where you will study, socialise and meet new friends. If you choose to live in University accommodation we will ensure that you have a safe and comfortable place to call home while you're in Bristol.

You can be assured of a warm welcome from the University's Accommodation Office. Our staff will advise on all accommodation matters and we can provide specialist advice to those with particular needs, such as disabled students and those with young families.

The University is continually looking at ways to maintain, develop and improve the quality of the residential estate. Included in the University’s ten year capital programme is provision for a substantial increase in expenditure on refurbishment of residences.

Living in student residences

We have over 4,000 places for new undergraduates in either catered or self-catered halls.

We offer:

  • halls of varying sizes, from four-bedroom, self-catered student houses to a 440-bedroom, catered hall;
  • a variety of room options including shared, standard single, single with basin, and en suite;
  • adapted accommodation for young families and students with disabilities;
  • halls within walking distance of the University;
  • a free bus service for students living in University allocated accommodation.

A home from home

Our student residences are true communities offering a unique experience. Student-led societies and committees will organise a range of social and sporting events throughout the year.

All halls have a warden who is responsible for resident welfare. The warden is assisted by deputy wardens and senior residents.

Our study bedrooms have phone and internet connection, helping you to keep in touch with friends and family.

Costs vary according to the location of the residence, the facilities available and the room type.

Living out of halls

If you decide to live at home or in private accommodation, you will still feel part of the student community. There are plenty of opportunities to meet new people through the University’s welcome events and through Orbital, the society for students living out of halls.

After your first year

Most students move into private accommodation after their first year.

There is a good choice of private accommodation near the University, with rents ranging from £333 per calendar month (pcm) to £391 (pcm) in 2012, depending upon the area and type of property.

The Accommodation Office can help you find private accommodation, and offers ongoing support while you are living in the private sector.
