For fees purposes, we classify all students as UK, EU or international. The amount you pay in tuition fees and the financial support available to help you with this and living expenses depend on your fee status which is largely determined by residency.
If you are an international (non-EU) student, your tuition fees will depend on your course of study. If you are ordinarily resident in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man, there may be an additional fee for some courses, which we believe will be met by your Island Authority.
Tuition fee amounts are reviewed annually. The tuition fees for Home/EU students have been set at £9,000 for 2014/15.
Tuition fees for part-time students, International and Channel islands students have yet to be finalised for 2014/15
As a guide, the table below shows annual tuition fee rates in 2013/14.
| Fee band | Home/EU full-time | Home/EU part-time | International full-time | Channel Islands and the Isle of Man |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arts | £9,000 | £4,500 | £14,250* | £9,000** |
| Science | £9,000 | £4,500 | £17,250 | £9,000** |
| Clinical | £9,000 | £4,500 | £32,000 | £9,000** |
*The arts-based fee applies to all degree courses in the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences & Law, excluding those listed below, where the science-based fee (£17,250) will apply.
**For some courses there may be an additional fee which we believe will be met by your Island Authority. Please contact your relevant Island Education Authority for more details.
If you are from the UK you will not be expected to pay your fees up front if you don’t want to and student loans will be available to cover the tuition fees.
Funding for UK home students will depend on where you normally live whilst not at university. The regional governments each provide different levels of support depending on your household income:
If you are an EU national (or child of an EU national) and wish to study in England you may be eligible for a tuition fee loan on a similar basis to UK students. You will need to apply via the Student Finance EU team.
Funding for international students (students from outside the EU and the UK) is extremely limited. If you are an international student you should ensure you have your funding in place before arriving at University.
For further information on the range of funding opportunities available to students, including part-time students, please see our Student Funding website.
UK and EU students who chose to take out a tuition fee loan will have their fees paid directly to the University by the Student Loans Company.
Students on NHS funded courses will have all of thier tuition fees paid to the University by the NHS.
A student who does not take out a tuition fee loan and chooses to pay their fees themselves can make one full payment or pay in two equal instalments. You will be sent payment details with your registration pack once your offer of a place has been confirmed.
UK and EU students whose residual household income is £25,000 or below and who are in receipt of a maintenance grant for living costs are able to have a reduction in their tuition fees, also called a tuition fee waiver.
Students from the UK only who are eligible for a tuition fee waiver can choose to have £2,000 of the fee waiver paid directly to them as a non-repayable bursary, this is known as the University of Bristol Bursary.
Students from Wales will receive a tuition fee grant of £5,535 from Student Finance Wales and are not eligible for the tuition fee waiver or the University of Bristol Bursary.
For further information on tuition fee waivers and the University of Bristol Bursary, please see our Student Funding website.
For repayment purposes the government will combine your tuition fee loan and maintenance loan. You will only start to repay your tuition and maintenance loan in the April after you have left Higher Education and are earning at least £21,000 a year.
For fees purposes, we classify all students as UK, EU, International or Channel Islands and Isle of Man. This is largely determined by residency. The University applies The Education (Fees and Awards) (England) Regulations 2007 and The Student Fees (Qualifying Courses and Persons)(England) Regulations 2007.
You will find a useful summary of these regulations in a guide produced by The UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA, formerly UKCOSA) entitled 'Tuition Fees: will I pay the Home or the Overseas rate?'.
UKCISA has a range of information on their website about fees, funding and student support.
Fees for students who are not on full-time programmes are usually charged pro rata to the full-time equivalent. From 2012, loans for tuition will be extended to eligible part-time first-degree students who complete a minimum of 25% of the full time programme load per year. Part-time students are not eligible for maintenance loans or grants for living expenses.
It is currently University policy not to charge a tuition fee to students in respect of a full year abroad through the Erasmus programme. However government funding for the year abroad is currently under review and the position for students going abroad in or after 2014/15 is unclear. Depending on the final outcome there is a possibility that we may need to introduce a fee of around £1,500 to £2,500. Further information will be made available as soon as government decisions have been made.
Home students studying or working on an ERASMUS year abroad in 2012/13 pay the following:
| Student type | Programme description | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Home | Whole year abroad | No fee |
| Home | Students away on Erasmus for a minimum of 6 months and on a Study Abroad programme for the remainder of the year | Half tuition fee rate |
| Student type | Programme description | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| International | Whole year Erasmus | Full tuition fee rate |
| International | Half year Erasmus | Full tuition fee rate |
The following tables provide the currently agreed fee rates for students on either a Year in industry or Study Abroad.
| Student type | Programme description | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Home | Whole year in industry | Half tuition fee rate |
| International | Whole year in industry | Quarter tuition fee rate |
| Student type | Programme description | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Home | Study whole year abroad | Half tuition fee rate |
| Home | Half year abroad/half Bristol | Full tuition fee rate |
| International | Whole year abroad | Full overseas tuition fee rate |
Students whose fees are paid on their behalf by an organisation such as a private company, charity, partnership or goverment department are known as 'sponsored' students. The University will only continue to recognise an organisation as your sponsor if payments are made promptly. You must remember that it is your responsibility to inform the University if you are being sponsored and ensure that fees are paid.
Download the sponsorship form (PDF, 40Kb).
Students who are in receipt of a tuition fee loan from their Student Finance provider or whose fees are paid by the NHS are not classed as sponsored students.
The tuition fees payable by UK and EU students undertaking their second undergraduate degrees will be £9,000, subject to approval from OFFA. Tuition fees amounts are reviewed annually.
Students who already have an undergraduate honours degree are not eligible for tuition fee funding from the government for a second undergraduate degree and will need to make provision for paying tuition fees themselves.
UK and EU students who undertake a second undergraduate degree that leads to a professonal qualificaton as a medical doctor, dentist or vet are able to apply for a maintenance loan for living costs.
The Student Funding website has more information for second degree undergraduate students.
Tuition fee amounts are reviewed annually. The tuition fees for Home/EU students undertaking the Veterinary Science (BVSc) course as a second degree have been set at £9,000 for 2014/15.
