Archaeology and Anthropology

Based in a vibrant, friendly, international department, Archaeology and Anthropology courses are taught by world-leading experts dedicated to the study of humankind in the past and the present. Flexibility and choice are the key features of studying a degree in Archaeology and Anthropology at Bristol. This flexibility will allow you to develop specific skills in Archaeology and/or Anthropology. You will be introduced to the disciplines from both practical and theoretical perspectives and gain problem-solving, teamwork and communication skills, as well as confidence in handling and interpreting complex data sets and concepts.

We use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, fieldwork and small-group seminars. You will be allocated a personal tutor who will follow your progress and give you advice throughout your degree. Members of staff direct fieldwork and research projects across the UK, Mediterranean, Africa, Middle East and Latin America. We also work in the Bristol area, in collaboration with local communities, museums and heritage organisations. In your final year you will have the opportunity to undertake a novel research project within these groups.

What kind of student would this course suit?

This course is an excellent choice for students who enjoy independent study and the opportunity to conduct fieldwork, as well as other practical work.

How is this course taught and assessed?

A wide variety of teaching methods are employed, such as lectures, small-group tutorials, student-led seminars, one-to-one meetings with tutors, and practical classes. Assessments are similarly varied, and include traditional essays, class tests, oral presentations, poster presentations, team-work, and formal exams.

What are my career prospects?

Many graduates undertake further research. A significant number have found employment with archaeological units, museums and heritage centres, as well as in the media, publishing and teaching. Having acquired cross-disciplinary skills, our graduates have also successfully entered other professions, including management, commerce, international development work and the Civil Service.
