Computer Science is a dynamic, interdisciplinary subject whose roots include mathematics, physics and electronics. Bristol is a leading university for the study of computing, with internationally recognised excellence in research and teaching. We are continually exploring new areas of research, being at the forefront of breakthroughs in science, technology and mathematics, and draw on this to inspire our teaching. A concentration of high-tech industries in the region enables us to provide a range of student projects and work placements.
Our courses will provide you with a thorough understanding of the foundations of the subject and will allow you to progress to advanced specialisations in a variety of practical applications, from artificial intelligence and robotics to cryptography and computer graphics.
The concentration of high-tech industries in the South West provides many benefits for Bristol’s computer science students. These industries are involved in providing scholarships, prizes and internships for students. Many students work with these companies on their projects and many of our graduates gain employment with them after completing their studies.
If you choose to study computer science at Bristol, you will meet people from a variety of backgrounds with a diverse range of interests. For some, the attraction to computer science is creativity - designing and making things, from programmes and digital content to electronic products. For others, it is more about intellectual challenges - solving problems and finding ways to understand complex phenomena, both natural and artificial. Some students are attracted to computing’s direct relevance to the real world and its importance in many areas of society.
Bristol is a research-led university, which means that our teaching is continually updated to reflect new advances and you will gain in-depth knowledge from people who are at the forefront of the subject. This is particularly desirable in a dynamic subject like computing, in which new ideas, techniques and applications are always emerging.
Engineering students at Bristol also benefit from a dedicated Industrial Liaison Office, which develops engineering-specific industrial links for students.
Computing provides a route into many different career paths, and our graduates have a wide choice in the kind of work they do, their working environment and lifestyle. Our courses provide a balance between cutting-edge topics, technical skills and transferable skills. Each year, many of our final-year students choose to exploit their knowledge by starting new companies, supported and encouraged by the department.
Bristol Computer Science graduates are highly regarded, not only by computer-related employers, but also in other sectors of industry, commerce and by many professions.
