Based in a vibrant, world-leading research department, History at Bristol is taught by experts recognised internationally for innovative research. Interests include Europe in the Middle Ages, modern China and Latin America, Soviet youth culture, the broader history of the British Empire, pagan religions, the Holocaust, environmental history and smuggling. The broad chronological, geographical and thematic range of our staff?s research interests feeds into our teaching, which places emphasis on progression through a wide choice of units.
At Bristol we offer you the opportunity to develop and extend your interests in history across a broad spectrum of subjects and approaches and through a variety of teaching formats. Our syllabus is specifically research-oriented and enables you to progress and to become capable of conducting independent original research.
We use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars and group projects. You will be expected to spend longer periods of time on independent study as the course progresses. In the final year you will be engaged in the production of substantial pieces of original historical research.
Assessment is by assigned essays, dissertations and projects as well as written exams taken at the end of each academic year. Like every other student on the course, you will be allocated a personal tutor who will follow your progress and give you advice throughout your time in Bristol.
Our graduates are much sought after and find employment not just in History, but in other areas including the managerial, administrative, media, financial and teaching sectors. Bristol History graduates have an excellent track record of employment, proving that the transferable skills gained during your History degree are rated highly by employers. A significant number of our graduates undertake further study for a postgraduate degree before pursuing a career in research or teaching.
