Why study Physics at Bristol?

Flexibility and choice are key features of a Bristol Physics degree as you can normally transfer between courses in the first two years. Our courses take a rigorous approach to problem solving, teamwork, experimental design and communication skills and you will gain confidence in handling and interpreting numerical information.

What kind of student would this course suit?

Bristol physics students come from a range of backgrounds and share a keen interest in physics and astrophysics. You will need at least an A in A-level mathematics, a lively and enquiring mind, commitment and a willingness to contribute. Our degree courses are designed to challenge and present you with opportunities to develop your abilities.

How is this course taught and assessed?

Teaching methods are varied, and your degree will include large lectures, small group work, individual computational work and laboratory work in pairs. Smaller group activities include tutorials and workshops in the first year. In subsequent years workshops and problem classes help to consolidate your learning. You are allocated a personal tutor who will follow your progress and give you advice throughout your degree.

Bristol has world-leading research groups in areas including theoretical physics, particle physics, correlated electron systems, nanophysics and soft matter, micro- and nanomaterials, quantum photonics and astrophysics. In your final year, you may undertake a novel research project in one of these groups. Assessment is by written examinations, assignments and, for computational and lab work, through written reports and oral interviews.

What are my career prospects?

Our graduates are much sought after and find employment not only in physics, but also in other areas including industry and management, administration, physics media, and the financial and teaching sectors. Bristol Physics graduates have an excellent track record of employment, proving that the transferable skills gained during the Physics degree are rated highly by employers.
