Management

To be effective in management you need to understand the economic, political and social environments in which businesses and other organisations operate. Our courses will help you to develop the quantitative, analytical and critical skills necessary to succeed as managers in careers across all sectors. We will ensure that you have a sound foundation not only in management, but also in economics, accounting and finance, as well as relevant areas of mathematics and the social sciences, helping you to develop a complete understanding of the practice of management.

Why study Management at Bristol?

The Department of Management, part of the School of Economics, Finance and Management, is small enough to be friendly and offer strong student support yet large enough to provide an international experience. One third of our students come from outside the EU, and we have strong links with international partner institutions.

Our management courses take a social science approach, examining the behaviour of individuals and organisations in their full context.

Common areas of study in the first year of each of our management courses allow you to transfer between degrees before the second year as your interests develop. In 2012, 27 per cent of our students graduated with First-class honours and a further 52 per cent earned a 2:1.

What kind of student would this course suit?

You will enjoy these courses if you want a degree which will offer you variety, contribute to your personal development and enhance your employability. In terms of personal development, you will learn how to structure arguments and develop strategies. You will work in teams and make presentations to small groups.

If you are scientifically-minded and also able to communicate ideas clearly then you will enjoy the balanced approach we take in our programmes, which develop your quantitative and discursive abilities which are so valued by employers. You will also enjoy studying Management with us if you like a balance of approaches in your learning. Our subjects address both theoretical and empirical aspects, our lecturing team comprises leading researchers and specialist teaching staff and your contact time will be balanced between lectures and small-group tutorials.

How is this course taught and assessed?

We teach using a variety of methods. As well as standard lectures in which new material is introduced, we run exercise lectures (involving application of material) and small-group tutorials (up to fifteen students each). These small-group tutorials are a distinctive aspect of teaching here at Bristol and enable valuable interaction and discussion with a tutor and with peers. You will prepare assignments during the year and we will give feedback, but they do not usually count directly to your final mark for the course - rather, they are to help you learn. The assessment which determines your score for each subject is examinations in the summer, except for a Management Dissertation in your final year if you choose our single honours BSc Management (which contributes 10% of your final degree mark). Optional units may include a coursework element in the final assessment. Your final degree is awarded based on your results in the second and final years.

What are my career prospects?

With a theoretically informed understanding of management and other related occupations, a Bristol management degree will equip you for careers in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

In 2011, 10 per cent of our graduates went on to postgraduate study. Of those who entered employment, 42 per cent chose accounting/auditing/taxation working with the major accounting firms, 38 per cent chose investment banking/asset management/financial analysis (employers including Citigroup and JP Morgan), and the remaining 20 per cent went into a variety of other careers, usually related to their degree, for example Strategic Business Consultant with Deloitte.
