Foundation Programme for international students

Our International Foundation Programme offers specifically tailored courses to prepare ambitious international students for degree-level study. As a fully integrated and valued centre within a world-renowned university, you will master the required level of academic English, study skills and subject knowledge required by the University in your chosen course for undergraduate study. Foundation Programme students will be based in the state-of-the-art Richmond Building and have access to new facilities.

Why study Foundation Programme for international students at Bristol?

The University of Bristol wants to attract the best and brightest students from all over the world. The International Foundation Programme is a key part of this aim. We recognise that there are highly able students who would significantly contribute to the University but who currently do not have the language level or academic background that would allow them direct entry on to degree courses. Our Foundation Programme aims to be the best possible bridge between your potential and our undergraduate courses.

Over the academic year, you will learn how to turn your good general English ability into a successful mastery of the academic language required to achieve your potential in the future degree of your choice. You will develop independence, the ability to think critically and other academic skills that will prepare you for degree level study. All this will be achieved in parallel to the study of academic subject units alongside University of Bristol undergraduate students.

What kind of student would this course suit?

These courses are designed to meet the needs of students whose native language is not English. You will have successfully completed high school studies in your country with good grades, but need to improve your language and academic study skills in order to achieve your full potential in your chosen degree subject. These courses are not suitable for students who have taken A-levels or the International Baccalaurate.

How is this course taught and assessed?

Our courses are assessed using a variety of techniques: course work involves practicals (for science options) and e-portfolios, and there are final exams in both subject and English units.

What are my career prospects?

On successful completion of the International Foundation Programme, you will be awarded a University of Bristol Pathway Certificate in Foundation Studies. You can also enter the UCAS admissions process to apply for degrees at Bristol and other universities, and will be given extensive support in making your application. If you perform well, you will be strongly encouraged to apply for an undergraduate degree at Bristol, and will also benefit from a guaranteed offer from the University. The course’s excellent reputation and successful completion record shows that students successfully progress on to undergraduate degrees at both the University of Bristol and other universities throughout the UK.
