Portuguese is the seventh most widely spoken language in the world. Since it is so prevalent, yet so rarely studied, knowledge of Portuguese is a very marketable skill. The department enjoys a strong reputation for its teaching and research in Hispanic, Latin American, Portuguese and Catalan culture. Exchange links with the Universities of Oporto, Lisbon, Coimbra and Evora in Portugal, and an agreement with the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil, contribute to the department's cosmopolitan atmosphere.
There are a variety of entry points into Portuguese at Bristol. Portuguese is offered as half of a Joint Honours degree and as part of Single Honours Hispanic Studies. Joint Honours students follow an intensive language programme during the first year if they are beginners. There is also separate provision for those entering with Portuguese A-level or equivalent.
First-year students follow introductory units on literature, culture and history. Literature and culture units enable you to improve your language skills through reading modern representative texts and viewing films, while giving you a taste of the cultural diversity of Portuguese-speaking countries.
All degrees last four years and include a period of residence abroad during the third year. Our units are taught via discussion groups, seminars and lectures, with language classes tailored to individual needs.
Our graduates enter a wide variety of careers, including banking, marketing, the media, accountancy, tourism, the Civil Service and teaching. Many graduates in Portuguese go on to work in Portugal or Brazil.
