We encourage applications from candidates in the UK and overseas to study for the postgraduate research degrees of MPhil, PhD or, (only for those with an undergraduate medical qualification) MD within the Centre for Mental Health, Addiction and Suicide Research. Unfortunately we cannot organise clinical training but you can contact our local clinical Trust if you wish to enquire about this option.
Within our Unit, students have their own desk, and PC with internet facilities, and access to phone and other basic facilities. Each student has a minimum of two advisers to give guidance about the research, and there is a Postgraduate Tutor, Dr Rachel Churchill, who has overall responsibility for postgraduate students. The School provides research training through access to a wide range of courses and seminars.
We encourage applicants to discuss their ideas with a senior member of the Unit before submitting a brief proposal for consideration. Candidates should have graduated with a good degree in a relevant subject. Initially we recommend sending a one/two page research proposal together with a C.V. to the Postgraduate Tutor Dr Rachel Churchill. Whilst we will consider any relevant research proposal, applicants should visit our website to inform themselves with research undertaken within the Unit . In particular we advise strong PhD candidates to look carefully at the list of potential studies listed because Senior members of the staff will be able to help with applying for funding for these studies . For overseas candidates fluency in English is essential (see minimum requirements and other general information using links below).
There is extensive collaboration across the University of Bristol departments both in training and research. Our School encourages multidisciplinary working with Primary Care, Public Health and Social Science. We also work closely with the Schools of Psychology, Education and Economics. The School runs several excellent short courses that can be accessed by our research students.
It is a condition of admission that all graduate students satisfy the University that they have adequate funds to support themselves financially throughout their periods of study. Both home and overseas candidates are welcome to apply. Make sure you check the current fees using the links below.
If we feel an application stands a good chance of success in the very competitive funding climate, then we will help with applications for studentships to the MRC, Wellcome Trust, NHS or other organisations.
Please visit our Accommodation Office for details about accommodation whilst at the University.
