Building Services

University Building Services are responsible for safeguarding and preserving the internal and external fabric of all University buildings, to ensure that staff and students are provided with acceptable standards of accommodation and working conditions. This includes the essential maintenance of buildings as well as undertaking minor building works including refurbishments.
Areas of their work that relate specifically to the Positive Working Environment 'Commitments' to staff include:
Keeping buildings wind and watertight and at an appropriate temperature
Through planned and reactive maintenance we aim to sustain the environment and operation of the buildings, plant and equipment at availability of 95%. This not only means that the buildings are wind and watertight, but that they are fit for purpose in other ways, for example; Spaces are maintained at an acceptable internal temperature during the cold months, and, Specialist areas are cooled when necessary during the hot months.
A support system that reacts quickly to physical environment emergency requests
We operate a 24Hour Helpdesk (Tel No. 01179 9289898 ), which is staffed during normal working hours, and reverts to a shift team outside of these hours. This system will provide a response to emergency, urgent or routine requests, by prioritising the problems reported and allocating the staff and resources to repair or make safe the system or building.
High Decorative Standards
As part of the planned maintenance programme, Building Services will ensure that all internal floor coverings are in a sound condition, are free from hazards and are fit for purpose. We will also manage a cyclical redecoration programme for accommodation and service areas. If you feel that a particular area should be added into these programmes, you should contact the surveyor below responsible for the building who will evaluate the need and if in agreement will include the work in order of priority.
A programme of building works in order to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act 2001
Building Services are actively engaged in a programme making reasonable adjustments to buildings to allow access for disabled people. The programme prioritises the spaces to be modified in terms of need and practicality. All new buildings will be fully accessible.
