Grounds Services
The University has in excess of 51 hectares of gardens associated with the main Precinct buildings, various halls of residence in Stoke Bishop, Clifton and Montpelier and other widely dispersed academic residential sites as far afield as Leigh Woods and Langford.
Alan Steeley the Manager of Grounds Services is responsible, with a team of professional horticulturalists, for the development, maintenance and budgetary control of all gardens round University buildings. Alan also acts in an advisory role with members of the Surveyors Office and architects on landscape planning matters for new University developments.
Grounds Services are very conscious of conservation matters. The following are examples of a positive policy:
- Development of natural grassland areas
- Naturally regenerating woodland areas
- Chipping of tree and shrub pruning to compost with fallen leaves
- Minimum use of pesticides with weed control in planted areas by hoeing, hand weeding and mulching
- Positive conservation of historic gardens
- Careful attention to our heritage of trees
- Maintenance of Badger reserves
