Security
Security Services provide a 24-hour a day service, 365 days of the year. This service includes the provision of security and car parking services by a uniformed team of staff. The department employs a total of 58 staff covering the main precinct in Bristol, the halls of residence and Langford.
The majority of the following interventions are available to ensure that we provide appropriate active security management controls. Those that are not yet in place will be by the end of 2006. Details of these developments will be highlighted in the PWE annual report.
High visibility foot and vehicle patrols
- At key areas and key locations where crime is occurring
- Providing staff with high visibility uniform and vehicles to maximise our deterrent effect and reduce the fear of crime
- Provide more staff on duty when more crime and/or increased requests for our service occurs
- Respond rapidly to calls for assistance
Security surveys and risk assessments
- Provide security surveys and installation quotations where requested and provide financial assistance where appropriate
- Working with Building Services, provide advice and improved physical security measures after a forced-entry burglary
- Working with an external consultant to look at activities by faculty to ensure we are working towards appropriate security safeguards
Central remote monitoring of security and safety systems
- Provide the latest technology to effectively monitor all relevant security/fire alarms and building management systems and provide the appropriate response
- Provide for a programme of expansion of existing alarm monitoring to ensure that that all identified high risk, critical and/or vulnerable buildings, processes or systems are properly protected.
- Continue to expand the CCTV coverage of buildings and areas based upon crime hot spots to provide round the clock surveillance and appropriate response to incidents
A customer-focussed service
- Provide a professional and courteous service
- Ensure all staff are licensed to national standards
- Provide a single point of contact with departments
- Investigate incidents fully in conjunction with third parties and/or the emergency services
- Deal with complaints professionally and fairly
- Ensure staff are regularly trained and kept up to speed with the latest legislation
- Provide a new security website with the latest crime figures
Personal safety awareness
- Staff training within the course directory
- Providing personal attack alarms free of charge to all staff and students
- Providing presentations or training to departments on request
- In conjunction with the Health & Safety Office, looking at lone working solutions
Maintain 'business as usual'
- Develop a business continuity framework to encourage departments to prepare for possible risks affecting their service
- Maintain the Major Incident Plan and ensure it is tested on a regular basis with key people
Increase security of buildings and its occupants
- Programme of increasing access control to all major buildings
- Introduce systems, where practicable, to reduce tailgating
- Work with departments to identify key risks and provide solutions to best protect and monitor them
- Produce a security manual to assist departments and individuals in how they can increase security and reduce crime
- Assist departments with property marking valuable and vulnerable equipment.
Provide a comprehensive car parking service
- Improve information available on the web
- Improve the database used to administer car parking in order to improve allocation of car parking spaces, improve enforcement and improve the production of car parking permits and correspondence
- Continue to provide a fast and efficient response to car parking enquiries
