Getting started in Pure

Pure is the University of Bristol's research information system. You can use Pure to record and manage details about research outputs, projects, research activities (awards, activities) and impact. The information in Pure populates the University’s Explore Bristol Research web site.

Logging into Pure

If you are a current member of academic staff, you will automatically have access to your personal Pure account. To access Pure go to the Pure web site http://www.bris.ac.uk/pure - click the red button labelled Log into Pure (above, top left) and enter your usual University user name and password through Single Sign-on.

For all other members of staff, Pure accounts may be requested. Go to user access to Pure for further details.

Emails and messages from Pure

The first time you log on to Pure a welcome screen will be displayed with information about setting your Pure email frequency. Pure will notify you about any changes made by another person to your research outputs, projects and activities - choose how often you want to receive emails.

The welcome screen will ask you to set the frequency with which you want to receive emails from Pure. By selecting a daily, weekly or monthly email alert you will receive all the messages relating to your profile during the relevant time period.

You can change your email settings at any time by clicking on your username at the top right corner of the Pure screen:

Remember to select Save after you make any changes to settings.

Your personal or editor's overview

Once you have logged on, you will be taken to the personal overview screen in Pure. This is your personal area within Pure where you can view, manage and add new content.

Editors - Pure will filter your department's outputs. Note that if you wish to view all outputs you can remove the "My content" label - click on the cross on the "My content" label and this will remove the filter limiting your view to the outputs which you can edit.

Left hand section

Select a heading to view a complete listing of your content. Filter, sort and search content within Pure.

output logo Research Outputs: Pure has been populated with publication records from IRIS and ROSE. Outputs can be added into Pure in several different ways including from online databases such as Web of Science. See the Guide to research outputs in Pure.

activities logo Activities: Personal users can maintain information about their research activities in this section including awards, conference attendance and invited talks. Historical IRIS editorial activity records have been added into this section. See the Guide to activities in Pure.

project logo Projects:  Funded projects with an “R...” finance code from 2002 onwards are sourced from University finance systems. Users can add additional information about these projects into Pure and also add non-funded projects (or non-externally-funded) . onto the system. Note that the difference between funded and non-funded will not be evident on the EBR web site. See the Guide to projects in Pure

application logo Applications/ Funding: Details of applications for research projects have been loaded into Pure from the University system ORCA. Approximately three years of successful and unsuccessful applications will appear in Pure as well as details of successful applications from 2002 onwards. impact logo Impacts: Personal users can use Pure to store examples of the impact of their research which may be useful in the future. See the Guide to impact in Pure

Central Section - Personal/academic users (see also Central Section - Editors)

This area provides a summary of your information within Pure.

View research connections: provides a visual means of viewing and exploring collaborations and research connections based on information held within Pure.

Personal Profile information: Pure takes a feed of information from the University’s HR system PIMS. This includes information such as names and job titles and research groups. Staff photos and profile information may have been drawn from the People Profiler application as a one-off process in November 2012. Photographs and profile information can be edited. Go to Your personal profile for further details about editing your personal details.

Central Section - Editors (see also Central Section - Personal/academic users)

The editor's central section contains all of the information to which you have editing access, e.g. your department or school. If you wish to remove this filter and view all content - you can remove the My content label in the Research output and other information-type sections on the left-hand side. To remove the filter click the cross (hover over it and the cross will turn red) on the My Content label. Click the green Add new button to add new content to Pure.

Searching, filtering and viewing content in Pure

Click on a content-type in the left section of your personal overview screen. You will be presented with a list of your content. This list can be filtered, searched and sorted.

By removing the My content label you are able to search and view all of the records held in Pure for staff across the University, where the record has not been marked as confidential. Click on the box with a cross in it next to the My Content label to remove this filter.

You can save filtered information: Click on the drawing pin next to the filter and name and save it. The filter will still be on the left-hand side when you next log in. To delete a saved filter, select it so that the filter results display and the left-hand link displays in a darker blue, then a cross will appear on the blue link and you can delete it by clicking the cross.

By default, all lists in Pure will display records in a short render format. The short render format contains basic information about the record. To see more detailed information about the record, click on the grey triangle to see the long render format.

Viewing individual records

To view detailed information about an individual record within Pure, click on the record and a new window will open with details of the record. Different information about the record can be seen by choosing different options on the left hand navigation. The Pure ID number of the record is displayed in the top left of the screen.

Downloading and extracting Pure content

To download and extract content from Pure, select the relevant heading in the left hand section of your personal overview screen. You will be presented with a list of content.

At the bottom of the screen you now have the option to download content from Pure. Various download options are available depending on the content type.

After you have selected your preferred download option, Pure will prompt you to select a download format for the records:

You can also extract the details of a specific record in Pure. To do this, select the record and a new window will open with details of the record.

display

Choose the option Display on the left hand navigation. The screen will display an overview of the record with several other tabs ‘formats’ and ‘exports’. From the format and extract tabs the record details are available in different downloadable formats.
