The monastic community, or Sangha, have an important part in Buddhist death rituals. They perform chants and rituals to help the deceased to gain a desirable rebirth. The Sangha acts as a 'field of merit'. When food or requisites are given to the Sanghait generates merit. This merit can then be given to the deceased to help them in their next life. This is not exclusive to one form of Buddhism but can be found throughout Southeast Asia and China.
