The Centre for Romantic Studies (CRS), on the behalf of the University of Bristol, has the honour of hosting the 2007 BARS/NASSR Conference. The event will combine the respective conferences of the British Association of Romantic Studies (BARS) and the North American Society for the Study of Romanticism (NASSR) for only the second time in the history of the organisations.

The conference board has decided upon the theme of "Emancipation, Liberation, Freedom" for the conference, which will enable scholars from a range of disciplines to participate.

We are delighted to be able to confirm the three plenary speakers for the conference:

  • Deirdre Coleman (University of Melbourne)
  • Margot Finn (University of Warwick)
  • Thomas Pfau (Duke University)
2007 is a year of significant anniversaries in Romantic Studies: 250 years since the publication of Burke's Philosophical Enquiry and Gray'[s Odes; 250th anniversary of the birth of William Blake; 200 years since Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare and Wordsworth's Poems in Two Volumes; two hundredth anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade. We hope that the conference will provide an opportunity to reflect upon these anniversaries.

The conference itself will take place in The Wills Memorial Building, the centrepiece of The University of Bristol. The Conference is supported by the Bristol Institute for Research into the Arts and Humanities (BIRTHA), under the BIRTHA Conference Scheme.         small BIRTHA logo

We hope that the conference will not only provide a unique forum for research into Romantic Studies, but that the conference will also set a standard of positive relations between British and North American academics, and also between the University of Bristol and the City of Bristol.
