Senior Lecturer
(BA (Sheffield) 1993, MA (SSEES, London) 1997, PhD (SSEES-UCL, London) 2003) has been a lecturer at Bristol since 1999. Before beginning his postgraduate studies, he taught English for three years at Palacký University, Olomouc, Czech Republic.
He has written on Russian, Czech and Slovak fiction of the late Communist and post-Communist periods, and is currently working on Czech inter-war fiction.
His book, Literature in Post-Communist Russia and Eastern Europe, explores how Russian, Czech and Slovak fiction published in the late 1980s and 1990s reflects and responds to this liberalisation,and features analyses of works by, among others, Venedikt Erofeev, Vladimir Sorokin, Tat’iana Tolstaia, Viktor Pelevin, Bohumil Hrabal, Daniela Hodrová, Jáchym Topol, Pavel Vilikovský, Peter Pištanek and Vlado Balla.
He has also published articles on two Czech writers who came to prominence in the 1960s liberalisation, Alena Vostrá and Ladislav Fuks, and is currently working on Czech Avant-garde fiction writers of the 1920s, in particular Vladislav Vancura and Jaroslav Durych.
His undergraduate teaching in recent years has included units on: Gogol and the Russian comic tradition, post-Soviet Russian fiction, and Czech literature from the nineteenth century to the present. He also contributes to the Department's Russian language teaching at all levels.
