Information for 1st Year Students
Language is taught at two different levels in the First Year. Beginners and students who have gained a qualification in Russian prior to entry follow separate courses. Beginners have six hours of language tuition per week in which they develop the four basic language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). Various materials and approaches are used, including textbook and multimedia courses. For qualified entrants language teaching is organised in fortnightly blocks of classes (four hours per week), in the course of which students will develop their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, study grammar, and work on translation work from Russian into English and from English into Russian. The language course for qualified entrants will focus on various linguistic themes and functions, using up-to-date materials, including materials from the Internet.
Visit the Unit Catalogue for details of all language, literature, culture and history units.
Single Honours students take six of these units plus two units outside the Department (e.g. Art History, European Cinema). Joint students take two of these units. Qualified entrants may if they wish begin the study of Czech in place of two of the options on Russian literature, history and culture.
