Summary

My research focuses on animation, film history and theory, intermediality, and the relationship between cinema and modernity. My first book, Film and Fairy Tales: The Birth of Modern Fantasy (I. B. Tauris, 2013) focused on the deep relationships between fairy tales, spectacle and cinema during its first decades. I am currently working on a five year project, funded by the European Research Council, entitled "The Idea of Animation" which examines the emergence of animation from 1915-1940 in France, the United States and the United Kingdom. The project traces how ideas of animation were developed through its relation to other media forms and cultural contexts.

Biography

My research focuses on animation, film history and theory, intermediality, and the relationship between cinema and modernity. I gained my PhD from the University of East Anglia in 2006, and joined the University of Bristol in 2008. My first book, Film and Fairy Tales: The Birth of Modern Fantasy, was published in 2013. I am currently working on an ERC-funded project entitled "The Idea of Animation" which explores the emergence of animation from 1915-1940 in France, the United States and the United Kingdom. I have published and presented on topics including the relationship of cinema with other artistic and cultural forms, the place of fantasy in cinema and modernity, and the aesthetics and culture of animated film.

Teaching

I have taught a range of units relating to film theory, history and aesthetics. Units regularly taught by me include undergraduate units in Animated Film and Contemporary Hollywood, and MA units in Film Theory and Contemporary Film. I have supervised MA dissertations on subjects ranging from Jean Renoir to Pixar.

I have supervised postgraduate work on topics including New Hollywood and Ecocriticism, and am currently supervising postgraduate students who are researching topics including Stan Brakhage and Film Philosophy. I am happy to consider supervising projects that relate to my areas of research interest, which include animation, film theory, fantasy and film, and cinema and modernity.
