Biography

I am broadly interested in the interplay between performance studies and masculinity studies, particularly in modern British contexts. This underpins my AHRC-funded research project “Performing Masculinities in South West England 1880-1914.” Drawing on local collections and newspaper archives I explore a range of case studies including amateur athletic sports; bodily spectacle and consumer culture; wrestling challenge matches in variety contexts; touring entertainments; and performances that drew on elite and popular discourses of boyhood.
