Research summary

My research interests lie in the social, political and cultural history of music in mid-twentieth-century Britain. At present, I am researching a book about some of the initiatives that developed in 1920s and ‘30s Britain to promote highbrow music to a wider audience. I am particularly interested in how the period’s technological advances, such as radio and cinema, and political instability, resulting from the rise of extremist ideologies, influenced the values attached to music in Britain.

Before joining the Bristol Department, I was a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Southampton. I completed my PhD at King’s College London, supported by a grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council. My thesis was a study of music and cultural values in Britain during the Second World War and its immediate aftermath. I also hold a BA and MPhil from the University of Cambridge.
