I am working on issues in philosophy of medicine and biology, including the concept of evidence in medicine, explanatory pluralism in biology, extrapolation and generalization in the life sciences, the epistemology and metaphysics of causal-mechanistic explanations, the explanatory role of mathematical models and computer simulations, gene and species concepts, as well as the integration, growth, and transfer of scientific knowledge across different fields of investigation and different periods of time.

I received a master’s degree in microbiology and immunology from McGill University and a doctorate degree in philosophy from Université de Montréal. I held post-doctoral positions at the University of Maryland (College Park, USA) and the Konrad Lorenz Institute (Klosterneuburg, Austria), followed by an associate professor position at Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (São Leopoldo, Brazil).

I teach a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Metaphysics and Epistemology, History and philosophy of science and biology, Philosophy of mind, as well as topics in Modern philosophy.
