Data Protection Adviser

Appoint a Data Protection Adviser in your Department
Inform the Data Protection Adviser in writing of his or her responsibility for data protection in the Department
Make allowance for the Data Protection Adviser’s extra workload
Send the Data Protection Adviser for training
Ask the Data Protection Adviser to undertake a written assessment of possible data protection problems in the Department, and to advise you how to deal with them
Ask the Data Protection Adviser to address the Department on data protection issues
Inform staff of the role and identity of the Data Protection Adviser and encourage them to seek help when in doubt

Until adherence to the Data Protection Act principles becomes second nature, publicise the short version of the Guidelines on notice boards
