Recruitment

Security Services maintains a waiting-list for security officer positions. The offer of a post is then made as and when a vacancy becomes available from this waiting-list. When the need arises, we run a recruitment & selection panel. The process of selection is in two phases:

Should you then pass through both parts you will be put on our waiting-list and offered a position as and when it arises, which might be up to a year later. Being on our waiting-list does not guarantee a job offer taking place within a year nor do we expect those on it to be obliged to accept a position when one is offered to them.

A security officer’s starting pay is £20,684 rising to £23,187 after five years service. This does not include annual pay rises or overtime, which would be in addition to the salary stated, but does include all shift allowances. Contracted hours are for an average 35 hours per week, however as we work an annualised hours roster, these hours vary per week over the year. We work 12 hour shifts in the main with the occasional 8 hour shift to provide extra cover in the evening. Annual leave is based on a basic rate of 23 days (rising by 2 days after 5 years service) with 15 additional days, which cover bank holidays and additional university days – bank holidays and university days are built into your roster but annual leave may be taken at any time, operational requirements permitting.

We allow 50 hours per person per year for formal training, which includes SIA courses, which the University funds in addition to paying for any SIA licences.

A Security Officer / Control Room Operator (Word doc. 91KB) job description is available which provides you with additional information about the post.
