Mr Andrea Zhok

Biography

Andrea Zhok was educated in Classics and Italian in Trieste before graduating in 1996 with the equivalent of an MA  from the University of Udine, reading English and Linguistics. He also studied at the University of Wales, Swansea where he also worked as a Language Assistant in a local school as an undergraduate.

He studied for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education in Modern Foreign Languages (PGCE, Wales 1999) and worked teaching Italian in South Wales for many years. He has also worked as a freelance translator and interpreter, and holds the Diploma in Translation of the Institute of Linguists (Dip Trans IoL, 2000).

In 2009, during a career break from Bristol, he worked in Italy as an EFL and Italian as Foreign Language teacher in a secondary school, also undergoing further training in pedagogic matters relating to language teaching. This included developing literacy and intercultural skills for integration of non Italian immigrant pupils.

Ever since joining Bristol, he has promoted innovation in language learning and was instrumental in bidding for improved IT resources within the SML, namely the Multimedia Centre.

In 2012 he received the UoB E-learning Award (together with Elena McNeilly from the Russian Department) for a project on the use of online discussion boards to support the teaching of translation to undergraduates.
