Dr Connor Doak


Originally from Northern Ireland, Connor obtained a BA from Cambridge (2005), an MSt from Oxford (2007), and a PhD from Northwestern University (2013). In 2012–3, he was awarded a Dissertation Completion Fellowship from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and American Council of Learned Societies as he finished his PhD on Mayakovsky's poetry. He joined the Bristol staff in 2013.

Connor is currently serving as Director of Teaching for the Department of Russian and Czech (2016-19) and is the lead contact for all matters concerning undergraduate education in the department.

Dedicated to outreach and public engagement. Connor was elected in 2018 as Representative for Slavonic & East European Languages to the Executive Board of UCML (the University Council of Modern Languages), the national umbrella organization that promotes research and education in modern languages in higher education institutions. He is also a co-opted member of the Executive Board of BASEES, the British Association of Slavonic and East European Studies, our subject association in the UK.

Connor has a special interest in Schools Liasion and Widening Participation and has built links between the University of Bristol and a number of schools in the south-west of England and beyond. Teachers in secondary schools and sixth-form colleges who have an interest in setting up a link with the Department of Russian and Czech are invited to email him.
