Dr Donal Hassett

Originally from Dublin, I hold a B.A. and M. Phil in European Studies from Trinity College, where I am also a Non-Foundation Scholar.

I completed my doctorate on the legacies of the Great War in Colonial Algeria at the European University Institute in Florence. I have lived and studied in France, Spain, Italy and Ireland and have also carried out research in Morocco and Algeria.

My research focuses on the history of the French Empire and in particular, North Africa. I am also interested in the legacies of Empire in contemporary France and Britain, the history of Islam in Europe and the history of the First World War.

Despite not having lived in Ireland for a number of years, I remain a committted supporter of the Dublin Gaelic football and hurling teams.
