Summary

Biography

Juan López Ramal graduated in Philology (Granada/Jaén) and took a further two-year specialization degree in English Philology. He then completed his Teacher Training Postgraduate degree (equivalent to PGCE) and obtained his Qualified Teacher Status, enabling him to teach Spanish, English and Humanities in the UK.

A year after starting his PhD programme, Juan arrived in England to teach Spanish at St. Peters’ Catholic School in Bournemouth for two years. After that, he joined the Hispanic, Portuguese and Latin American Studies Department as a lector. He was later appointed Teaching Associate and now he is a Teaching Fellow.  

In 2008, Juan graduated from the University of the West of England’s Translation Studies MA, with a Distinction.

He has taught in Spain and in the UK in both the private and public sectors. Juan is also a qualified copy editor and has worked as a freelance translator.

Juan has taught across the UG Spanish Language degree programme and AFL and is involved in the MA in Translation.  He is also the Departmental Year Abroad Coordinator for study placements in Spain.

Teaching

In his teaching career spanning three decades, Juan has taught languages in the UK and abroad in secondary schools, language schools and at University level.

At the University of Bristol, he has taught both at degree level and AFL (Applied Foreign Languages). He has taught at undergraduate level (Year 1, Year 2 and Year 4) and has been involved in the MA in Translation and the MA in Advanced Language Skills.

At present Juan designs and teaches the Year 2 Spanish Language programme (Grammar, Translation, Reading and Writing Skills, Aural Skills), Year 4 (Oral Skills) and is involved in the MA in Translation. He also co-teaches the Year 4 SML unit “Teaching Modern Languages as a Foreign Language”.

His consultation hours during teaching weeks are on Friday 14:00-16:00. Meetings outside these hours can be arranged by e-mail.
