Research summary

My research interests lie in nineteenth-century French literature and culture. My work to date has explored the interplay between literary and non-literary forms and, more recently, the history of emotions. My doctoral thesis, carried out at the University of Cambridge, was a sustained historicisation of the concept of intimacy in post-Revolutionary France. The thesis argued that, far from being an age-old aspect of love, friendship, or desire, intimacy was a concept and keyword of growing significance in the nineteenth century, shaping, and in turn shaped by, literary culture.
