My research and teaching focus on Czech literature from the nineteenth century to the present, and Russian and Slovak fiction since the 1960s. I have published monographs on Russian, Czech and Slovak fiction of the post-Communist transition, and on the Czech Avant-garde novelist and dramatist, Vladislav VanĨura, and articles on Ladislav Fuks and Alena Vostrá, among others. I am currently working on the portrayal of the countryside in Czech literature. My next monograph will explore the Czech inter-war Ruralist movement. I have a BA in Russian Studies (Sheffield, 1993) and MA in East European Studies and PhD from SSEES-UCL (1997, 2003). From 1993-96 I taught English and British Studies at Palacký University, Olomouc, Czech Republic. I took up my present post at Bristol in 1999.
