Research summary

My research interests lie in the intellectual history and literature of the Spanish long eighteenth century and I am the author of books and articles published in the UK, Spain and the US that aim to deepen and enrich our understanding of how people in this period lived, expressed, and understood themselves and their relationships with others. My most recent publication is a scholarly edition of Leandro Moratín's La mojigata (Barcelona: Castalia, 2015), which is based on a manuscript of the play presented by the author himself to Elizabeth, Lady Holland in August 1804, three months after the appearance ...

Biography

A graduate in Spanish and Philosophy from the University of Sheffield (BA Hons 1st Class 1986; PhD 1991), I was appointed as a Junior Research Fellow at the University of Bristol in 1989 and then to a Lectureship in 1990. I was the Faculty of Arts Dean of Undergraduate Studies from 1997 – 2000 and following promotion to Senior Lecturer, Head of Department from 2000 – 2006. I have been elected a staff representative on Council from 2014-2017.
