MA in Translation

Contact with the other students on the course is crucial. One is never ‘alone’, sitting at one’s desk at home! Discussion boards are good forums for placing worries and queries.

Victoria - MA Translation

The MA in Translation is a distance-learning Masters programme for aspiring or practising translators. It is suitable for Modern Languages graduates offering any one or two of the following languages in addition to English:

  • Czech
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Portuguese
  • Russian
  • Spanish
  • Mandarin

The MA combines intensive language-specific practice with training in the theory and practice of translation.

You may decide to study for either an MA, or for a Diploma.

The course is delivered through the Blackboard virtual learning environment. You will study interactively, as part of an online group, led by a tutor. Take a tour of Blackboard to find out more about how we support you during the course.

The programme is taught entirely on-line and you are not expected to come to campus at all. However, you are just as much a member of the University as any other student and we are always delighted to welcome you to Bristol if you can get here.  If this is not possible, we include you in our lively research community in other ways, by podcasting talks and events. We can also communicate directly with you by phone or Skype if you need help.

We are working with the 'European Masters in Translation' (EMT) university network, which was set up by the European Commission in response to a growing shortage of properly qualified translators in the job market.
