Summary

Abby is currently working on an MRC-funded project exploring biological mechanisms that may explain the link between exposure to early life adversity and later self-harm (PI Dr Becky Mars). The project will also explore the genetic overlap between self-harm with and without suicidal intent.

Abby has research interests in mental health, with a focus on children and adolescents. Social, environmental and biological causes of mental health difficulties are a focus of her work thus far, and Abby hopes to continue her career with both epidemiological studies as well as the development and evaluation of interventions that promote positive outcomes for those with mental health difficulties. Abby's work prior to her PhD focussed on supporting adults and children with psychiatric disorder, and her interest in the role of the school as a vehicle for promoting positive mental health outcomes has endured into her academic career.

Having undertaken her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences and Psychology at the University of Edinburgh, Abby received her PhD at the University of Exeter Medical School, her thesis explored the association between socioeconomic disadvantage and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Abby has worked on projects around depression, ADHD and self-harm in particular, and has conducted epidemiological analysis using data from two major UK birth cohorts: ALSPAC and Millennium Cohort Study.
