My main research interests are in the design and conduct of clinical trials, the links between diet and prostate cancer, cancer prevention and survivorship and questionnaire design and utilisation

I  joined the School of Social and Community Medicine, University of Bristol in 1996 after being a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Bristol Long Ashton Research Station. My BSc at York and PhD at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth were in biology. Since joining the School I have coordinated several randomised trials including the HTA trial of treatments for localised prostate cancer – ProtecT and a trial of Helicobacter pylori eradication on dyspepsia.

Activities / Findings

Recent findings from a feasibility randomised trial of dietary prevention of prostate cancer with Chris Metcalfe and collaborators at Bristol Univeristy and North Bristol Trust funded by CRUK showed that men are willing and able to adhere to dietary or capsular forms of lycopene (found in tomatoes) and green tea for six months.

Co-organiser of a SOCM postgraduate short course on Questionnaire design, application and data interpretation, co-organiser of the SOCM cancer epidemiology short course and teaches on the SOCM randomized controlled trials short course. Contributor to fourth year medical undergraduate teaching on randomised trials.
