More about this group

The School of Social and Community Medicine (SSCM) houses around 50 medical statisticians who work on diverse projects in applied health services research and epidemiology. We also have strengths in specific methodological areas and collaborate with statisticians in the School of Mathematics. In particular, we have world leading expertise in meta-analysis and evidence synthesis, causal inference, Mendelian randomization and statistical genetics, longitudinal data analysis, missing data, and prognostic modelling.

The group is led by Professor Jonathan Sterne (Head of School), Professor Kate Tilling (Faculty Research Director), and Dr. Margaret May (Senior Statistician).

We have an active seminar programme, and special interest groups on causal modelling, methods for modelling longitudinal data, and research synthesis (CReSyDa).

Training is a key activity and is delivered via our very popular short course programme which includes courses on stata, introduction to statistics, regression models, analysis of repeated measures, rates and survival analysis, advanced network meta-analysis, statistical genetics, and design and analysis of RCTs.

Medical statisticians support many units and centres in the University of Bristol.
