I am the co-director, with Athene Lane, of the Bristol Randomised Trials Collaboration. I provide statistical expertise or supervision to a number of major research studies, including:

  • A study of training shop-keepers, aimed at reducing pesticide self-poisoning in Sri Lanka
  • The FITNET study, evaluating internet-based treatment for adolescents with chronic fatigue
  • The ROMIO study, comparing surgical techniques for oesophagectomy in the treatment of cancer

My research into statistical methods is opportunistic, addressing questions that arise during my diverse mix of applied work.

I am an Associate Editor for the journal Statistical Methods in Medical Research.

I have been a member of the International Society for Clinical Biostatistics since 2003. I served on the Executive Committee between 2012 to 2016, was a member of the local organising committee for the Birmingham 2016 conference, and a member of the scientific committee for the Melbourne 2018 conference. I am currently a member of the National Groups and Student Conference Awards committees.

I am a member of several study oversight committees, including a Swedish study of colorectal cancer screening based at the Karolinska Institute, and the NEON study of the management of digital nerve injury based at the University of Oxford.

I am the Academic Director of the Population Health Sciences short course programme. In addition I co-lead the short course in Randomised Controlled Trials with Athene Lane.

I am an Academic Supervisor for the Severn Deanery Public Health Training Programme.

I am a tutor for the MSc Public Health and MSc Epidemiology.

I welcome enquiries about Ph.D. supervision of projects aimed at developing and applying quantitative methods to answer questions in population health and health services research.
