The John Rutley Sport Fund was created to develop sport and activity programmes for young people in Bristol. Managed by the University of Bristol’s Sport, Exercise and Health team, projects are developed and delivered in partnership with local schools, colleges and youth groups.
John Rutley, Chief Executive of Bristol based A-GAS International, was already closely involved with University sport with he and his company supporting both the rugby and rowing programmes through personal donations and corporate sponsorship. John’s donation of £100,000 in 2007 followed a desire to contribute to the progression and development of the wider local community. On launching the fund John said, “I’m delighted to be associated with a fund dedicated to creating high profile and accessible sporting activities for young people in our region.”
“John has been a great supporter of University sport for many years, and now we are able, through his generosity, to branch out and help in the development of activities and programmes of benefit to young people in the wider community. This will contribute to the promotion of healthy physical activity generally, while creating greater opportunities for talented young people to fulfil their potential.” Bob Reeves, University of Bristol
Simon Hinks, Director of Sport at the University, said, “We’re delighted with the opportunity afforded by this funding to use our expertise, enthusiastic volunteers and excellent contacts outside of the University to make sport and physical activity more accessible and enjoyable for young people in the area.”
