What does good health and wellbeing look like to you?Healthy living looks different for everyone - and certainly isn't just about fruit and fitness! Health isn't automatic and it doesn't come just through medical treatment. It is something we develop and experience where we work, study, live and play.
In February 2013 we asked the University community to show us what being healthy and being well look like to them. Staff and students were invited to submit photographs showing their take on good health and wellbeing. It could be something they do (or would like to do!) to improve their health, something that shows what health and wellbeing looks or feels like. It could be an activity, a 'thing', a place, a mood. Creativity was encouraged! Great images were submitted, demonstrating just how varied people’s perspective of healthy living really is, as well as how creative our staff and students can be. Their photos showed health as part of their lives, where they live, love and learn - not as an add-on. See the 2013 winners here
Originally conceived as a one-off competition, the response was so good that we want to make the big picture bigger! As an ongoing programme, all members of the University are invited to keep contributing their images and help us give a richer and fuller representation of the University experience of healthy living. We will be awarding prizes every term, so keep the pictures coming.

After much discussion the judges agreed on the top three. Philip Bruland was crowned the overall winner with his entry - showing walkers and cyclists crossing the old railway bridge near the CREATE centre on Spike Island - catching the judges’ eyes for its depiction of people sustaining their mental and physical health in an urban environment. The Electrical and Electronic Engineering student said: “I am very happy to win first place and I think it shows that you can take great photos with just your phone, good timing and a bit of luck.” For his efforts, Philip won a brand new camera and will have his image on display at the sports centre initially, before being used to promote health and wellbeing across the University.
Second place went to Dr Edith Kreutner, from the Department of German, for her shot entitled ‘Feeling on top of the World’, which was taken on Hochfeiler Mountain, situated on the border between Austria and Italy. She won an activity tracking device. In third place was Dr Tom Podesta, from the School of Biochemistry, with his ‘Speed racer’ image of runners during the Bristol Half Marathon. He won four weeks’ worth of veg box deliveries.
