Derek's academic interests include policy analysis, Local Government Practice, Homelessness, Care in the community, Ethics in public policy, Gypsies and the Select Committees in the House of Commons.

Derek Hawes' recent books include 'The Gypsy and the State'; 'Power on the Back Benches?' and 'Older People and Homelessness. Derek's current work involves the impact of the Local Government Act 2000 and the role of Ethical Standards Committees in developing good practice.

Since retiring from the full-time staff at the School for Policy Studies, he has become Chair of the Broxbourne Housing Association and also writes regularly on current European Union politics for the Journal of Contemporary European Studies.
