FIRST THURSDAY ITALIAN @ The Hawthorns (University of Bristol)
New in October 2013, on the first Thursday of each month, join members of the Italian Cultural Centre of Bristol to share language and culture at a casual open evening from 6pm to 8pm at The Hawthorns, 14-16 Woodland Rd, Bristol, Avon BS8 1UQ.
An opportunity for anyone to mingle and chat with Italians and participate in themed conversations. Aimed at developing a lively, friendly atmosphere, allowing everybody to learn all aspects of the rich Italian culture in a spontaneous way.
The 2013 - 2014 theme is "THE FOUR SEASONS".
Art
Sandro Botticelli, Italian painter of the Early Renaissance. His masterpiece Primavera (c. 1482) is an icon of the springtime renewal of the Florentine Renaissance, exhibited at the Summer Palazzo of Pierfrancesco de' Medici.
Nature and Health
Italy boasts an incredible variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, they change with the seasons, and every visit to an Italian outdoor market makes us discover something new.
Cinema
Mid-August Lunch (Pranzo di Ferragosto) is a 2008 film directed by Gianni Di Gregorio. Gianni, a middle aged man who lives with his capricious mother, finds himself having to cook for four elderly women on the Italian holiday of Ferragosto. This amusing comedy with hints of neorealism won best debut film at the Venice Film Festival in 2008.
Cuisine
Pizza certainly needs no introduction, but maybe the Four Seasons Pizza give us the opportunity to speak about the history of a modern pizza originated in Naples in the 19th century, and spread to many different parts of the world.
Geography
Italian Weather, climate and geography. Given its long boot-like shape and varied geography, the weather in Italy varies considerably from north to south.
Literature
Italo Calvino was an Italian journalist and writer of short stories and novels. Marcovaldo is a collection of stories initially published as Le stagioni in cittą (Marcovaldo, or The Seasons in the City). The twenty stories have been structured so as to represent the yearly seasonal cycle five times.
Music
Antonio Vivaldi, recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers, his influence during his lifetime was widespread over Europe. Vivaldi is known mainly for composing instrumental concertos, especially for the violin, as well as sacred choral works and over forty operas. His best known work is a series of violin concertos known as "The Four Seasons".
