Staff Development opportunities

Teaching Bites

Teaching Bites are hour long sessions that address a number of different teaching themes, for example Graduate Attributes, Field Work and Inclusive Teaching. They will be delivered throughout the academic year and the next session will take place on Thursday 22nd December. They are an opportunity for all staff with teaching responsibility, irrespective of whether you have been on CREATE, to engage in conversations around teaching practice. Developing a Service Excellence Approach
Date: 5th December
Time: 09.30-16.30
This practical workshop will help you clarify your vision of service excellence and how to communicate it effectively to your team.

Handling Difficult Conversations
Date: 19th December
Time: 09.30-16.30
An integral part of any working relationship, but especially a line management relationship, is having those difficult conversations about poor performance, persistent absences or a bad attitude. This interactive workshop outlines what techniques and approaches you can apply in having these conversations in order to make the situation better, rather than worse.

Building Resilient Teams
Date:23rd January
Time: 09.30-16.30
This workshop is for managers who would like to understand how staff manage their pressures, to be more resilient to the challenges at work and to create a good working atmosphere for themselves and their team.

Successful Recruitment and Selection
Date:31st January and 28th February
Time: 09.30-13.00 and 12.30-16.00 respectively
Successful recruitment and selection is a key element in any hiring manager’s “tool kit”. The Successful Recruitment and Selection training course will give you the necessary knowledge and confidence to run effective recruitment campaigns on behalf of the University and greatly improve the likelihood of you recruiting the right person for your team.

Professional Skills Development Workshops

Please find below dates for our professional skills development workshops for all Professional Services staff. Before booking onto a course, please read through our terms and conditions.

Presentation Skills - giving confident presentations
Date:9th February and 16th February
Time:09:00-17:00 (2 x 1 day workshops, one week apart)
In this practical workshop we will look at how to prepare and structure your presentation, engage with your audience, use visual aids effectively, and how to control your nerves to increase your confidence. You will have two opportunities to practice your skills and to receive constructive feedback to help you enhance your presentations.

Women's self defence (Level 1)
Date:17th February 2017
Time:10.30-12.00
Award-winning personal safety workshop designed to empower you in your pursuit to overcome a perceived harmful event, attack or threat to survival. Please visit the website to book your place. The workshop will teach you ground manoeuvres and how to cope with physical attacks, with a focus on high-impact scenarios.

Interested in Volunteering as a school governor?

Come along and find out more at an informal presentation and Q&A session with SGOSS (School Governors One Stop Shop) from 12.00-13.00 on Wednesday 7th December in the Cabot Room, Hawthorns. This event is for staff who are interested in taking on school governor roles, but are not yet school governors. Please contact positive-working@bristol.ac.uk to express your interest in attending.

How to solve your electronic product design problems and find a route to market

It is intended for anyone with an idea, a prototype or a full product on the market already who wants a better understanding of product development.

The purpose of this session is to help those wanting to build their team. Regardless if you are looking to make your first hire or if you are expanding, this session should give you some guidance as well as practical tools to make sure that you can define what and who you are looking for, where and how you can find them and finally, how to ensure that you attract and secure the talent.
