Are you a new manager in Professional Services?

If so we encourage you to attend the New Managers' networking lunch on 13th May. This event, aimed at new and new-to-role managers from all over the University, gives you the chance to talk with other new managers, discuss how your role is progressing and swap ideas and experiences. The University Registrar, Robin Geller, will be joining us to speak about her recollections of early management and to network with attendees, along with a number of other experienced managers from across the University. We hope to see you there.

Managing Meetings
Date: 10th May
Time: 09:30-12:30
Whether you are attending or chairing meetings, there are a number of considerations, together with a broad range of skills that will help you get the best from meetings for all concerned. This highly practical workshop will provide those understandings and allow you to practice the skills.

Handling Difficult Conversations
Date: 11th May
Time: 09:30-16:30
An integral part of any working relationship, but especially a line management relationship, is having those difficult conversations about poor performance, persistent absences or a bad attitude. This interactive workshop outlines what techniques and approaches you can apply in having these conversations in order to make the situation better, rather than worse.

Self-Directed Career
Date: 27th May
Time: 09:30-16:30
In today's employment market, job security doesn't come from staying in one job for life, but rather from ensuring that you are as employable as possible amidst a climate of continual change. In this reflective one-day workshop you will take time to review where you are, where you are going and the skills you need to develop so that you can achieve personal success.

Leadership and Management Programmes

Applications for the 2016/17 Leadership and Management programmes will open week commencing 30th May. The process will involve a written application to be completed by yourself and your line manager. Specific details will follow next month on our website and in the next bulletin.

Mixed Self Defence (Level 1) Workshop
Date: 26th May
Time: 10:30-12:00
Award-winning personal safety workshops designed to empower you in your pursuit to overcome a perceived harmful event, attack or threat to survival. Please visit the website to book your place. Open to all members of staff, both male and female.

Introduction to assertiveness
Date: 6th June & 13th June
Time: 09:00-13:00
This practical workshop focuses on developing an understanding of the difference between assertive, non-assertive, passive/aggressive and aggressive behaviour, and the potential impact of each of these behaviours on our working relationships.

Influencing Skills
Date: 8th June and 20th July
Time: 09:00-13:00
In this interactive workshop we will consider the importance of social skills in effective influence, practise these skills to influence others to achieve an identified objective, and recognise when and how to accept the opinions, values and needs of others to achieve a win/win outcome.

How to work with people whose behaviour you find 'difficult'
Date: 15th June and 13th July
Time: 09:00-17:00
This workshop focuses on developing an understanding of the range of our own and other people's behaviours, recognising how conflict arises, what triggers our reactions, and reviewing the choices we have in our response so that we can avoid conflict and work productively with others.

Be a better internal candidate for jobs
Date: 16th June and 12th July
Time: 09:00-17:00
The workshop will cover – assessing your skills and personal qualities, matching to job descriptions and person specifications, providing evidence of experience, writing your application, preparing for interview, and controlling interview nerves.

Building inner resilience
Date: 30th June
Time: 09:30-16:30
In a supportive group atmosphere, you will be invited to identify and explore what triggers stress for you and to develop positive coping strategies. The main focus for the day will be learning to recognise and change negative moods and patterns of thinking.

Managing yourself and your time
Date: 19th July
Time: 09:00-17:00
In this one day workshop we'll look at traditional tools and techniques to manage yourself and your time, but we'll also explore some associated issues that can create time management problems, for example, procrastination.
