Prospective postgraduates

UK/Home

Funding options for postgraduate study are significantly different to those available for undergraduate study. Unlike undergraduate study, there are no statutory funding sources for postgraduate students. This means you will either have to fund your postgraduate study yourself, or you may be able to access one of the many funding sources the University has for postgraduate study.

In all cases, since postgraduate funding is allocated according to subject and research area, you are advised to contact the school where your research interests lie, to make enquiries about possible funding opportunities.

The options for funding are also different according to whether you are considering a research degree (eg PhD) or a taught degree (eg Master's).

International

Funding for international postgraduate students is fairly limited and students should ensure they have their funding in place before arriving at University.

Competition for the funding detailed in this section is extremely strong and generally only students with a First Class degree or very good Upper Second Class degree would be eligible to apply.

Funding for taught Master's degrees is limited to the DfID scheme, which is only open to students from Commonwealth, developing countries coming to this University to study specific courses.

PhD funding is more general in that there are no limitations placed on nationality or course, providing Bristol is able to offer supervision for the topic being researched. Please note that in order to be eligible to apply for any funding listed here, students must first apply for, and be offered, a place.

Information about applying for your chosen course of study can be gained from the postgraduate contact in the relevant faculty.

Students are also advised to contact the British Council in their home country and also the department they wish to study in at University, to see if they know of any additional funding available.
