ABOUT THE LIBRARY CATALOGUE Welcome to your Library Catalogue online tutorial, ‘About the Library Catalogue’. It aims to answer the following three questions, and will take approximately three minutes to view. What is the Library Catalogue? What is, and what is not, in the Library Catalogue? Where do I find the Library Catalogue? First, what is the Library Catalogue? You can think of the Library Catalogue as a directory of most of the materials that the University of Bristol stocks in its various branch libraries. It can be freely searched from any Internet connection worldwide. When using the Library Catalogue you can find materials by author, title, subject and classmark or shelf location. For each item in the catalogue you will find out which branch library holds that item, its classmark, the length of time for which you can borrow it, whether it is currently available and details of when and where it was published. Next, what is, and what is not, listed in the Library Catalogue? Well, it contains details of: over 1.5 million printed volumes and a growing number of electronic books over 15,000 print journal titles and thousands of other materials in many formats including: CDs DVDs Videos Microfilms and theses And what won’t you find in it? Perhaps you may need material published before 1978. If so, search the online Library Catalogue first, but if you do not find what you are looking for, you may need to search the library’s card catalogue. If you would like help with this just ask a member of library staff. You may be interested in finding the details of individual articles or chapters published in journals, conference proceedings or books. You won’t find these listed in the Library Catalogue either, so to find them you will need to consult a journal article database such as the Web of Knowledge. And finally, where can the library catalogue be found? The catalogue can be searched directly from the home page of the Library Services web site, or you may link to the catalogue’s own interface for a more thorough search. You do not need a username and password to use the library catalogue. How to search the library catalogue and use its other features are explained in further tutorials as well as on the catalogue help page. You have now completed this presentation about the Library catalogue, thank you.
