Lisa's story

Lisa, a Biology Student, shares their experience of Bristol and becoming the LGBTQ+ officer for the University African Caribbean Society.

Why Bristol?

Bristol has a high percentage of queer students and residents so that drew me to it. I absolutely love the city, it’s beautiful and welcoming and so much unlike London whilst still having a city feel, so I don’t feel out of place. I’ve really enjoyed exploring the vast green spaces Bristol has to offer and have more recently been attending more creative events and trying new restaurants.

Feeling at home

I am the LGBTQ+ officer for the University of Bristol ACS (African Caribbean Society). I think at the beginning it was hard to make friends because I’m a shy person when I first meet people. But going to ACS events really helped me to find other Black people in Bristol and feel more at home which was amazing.

Advice to myself

If I could give my former self advice I’d say don’t stress as much. You’ll meet the people you need to meet and have the right experiences. There’s no need to rush or force yourself to go do things you don’t want to do. I’d also say Bristol is an amazing place there’s so much it has to offer. Going to a new city where you’ve been told it’s going to be majorly white is incredibly scary, focus less on what people have told you and more on what you want to get out of Bristol. Ultimately, I’d say enjoy yourself, university is hard, but you’re determined and more than capable, and I know you’ll succeed.
